Changing the dream environment

Direct commands mostly fail. Indirect methods mostly work, and the difference tells you something about how the dream is being built.

Deciding a beach should appear, and expecting one, usually produces nothing. Practitioners converge on indirect methods instead.

Methods that tend to work

  • Doors. Decide what is behind a door before opening it. The dream fills the unseen space.
  • Spinning. Spin in place with an intended destination in mind, and let the scene reassemble.
  • Closing your eyes within the dream and expecting a different place when you open them.
  • Travelling. Walk around a corner, go over a hill, fly into cloud. Anything that hides the current scene and gives it a reason to be replaced.

Why indirect works better

The common thread is that all of them remove the scene from view first. The dream appears to construct what is being observed and to be much less committed to what is not. Ordering a change to something you are staring at means overwriting an active construction; going through a door means letting one be built fresh.

This fits what imaging suggests about REM: visual association areas assembling scenes without input from primary visual cortex. There is nothing to contradict, only something to construct.

Expectation matters more than will

The most consistent report across practitioners is that expecting something works far better than willing it. Doubt tends to be self-fulfilling: reaching for a door handle while wondering whether the door will open often produces a door that does not.

Which is unfalsifiable as stated, and worth holding loosely. But it is what the reports say.
