What do people report about a protective animal in a dream?
The consistent detail is orientation: the animal faces the threat, not the dreamer. Accounts emphasise its back. The dreamer is behind it.
It rarely attacks and, in most accounts, does not need to. Reports describe the threat withdrawing, stopping, or ceasing to matter once the animal is in position.
Species varies enormously and does not appear to be the operative feature. Reports describe dogs, wolves, big cats, horses, birds and animals the dreamer cannot identify, with the same behaviour throughout.
