What does it mean to hear a wolf in a dream?
Mentioned unprompted with unusual frequency, and dreamers often report hearing it before seeing anything.
That puts it in the small group of reliably reported dream sounds: whale song, breaking glass, knocking, wind, an owl, a cockerel, leaves underfoot, a fly, a waterfall, and this.
The pattern across that list is worth noting. Sound arrives most reliably where sight has been withheld, and a howl is the purest case: it establishes an animal, a distance and a setting without anything having to be rendered at all.
It is an efficient piece of construction, and it is why the sound so often comes first.
