Dreaming about hearing a voice with nobody there

What does it mean to hear a voice in a dream with no source?

The characteristic report: heard clearly, with no source, and frequently saying something the dreamer cannot afterwards recall.

Where this happens while falling asleep or waking, it is a recognised and well-documented phenomenon. Hearing sounds and voices at the boundaries of sleep is common, it happens to people with nothing whatever wrong with them, and it is not a symptom of anything on its own.

That is worth stating plainly, because it is what frightens people about it, and a fair number never mention it to anybody.

The lost content is ordinary. Dreams generate the sound of speech far more readily than speech with words in it, which is the same economy that produces unreadable text.

Where this reads well

The explanation is genuinely reassuring and it is what most people come to this page for.

Where it is harder

Unexplained, these are frightening, and the clarity of the voice is what makes them so.

Worth asking yourself

Was I falling asleep or waking? Could I recall any words? Did I recognise the voice?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
