Why do I dream about a uniform I have not worn in decades?

A school uniform, an old employer's, a service left long ago. People regularly report the garment in detail they cannot summon awake, which the grandparent's-house and old-teacher reports also find.
Old settings and their furniture recur far out of proportion to how much anybody thinks about them. Recency is plainly not what governs reuse, and this is one of the clearer examples because a uniform is so precisely dated.
These are reported without the entitlement anxiety of the first scenario, which makes sense: the dreamer genuinely was entitled to it, once.
