What does it mean to dream you are in prison?
The dominant structure, and it is identical to the police and court reports: the dream supplies the consequence and leaves the cause blank.
Dreamers describe being held with complete acceptance and no charge. They do not ask, do not protest, and do not doubt that they belong there.
The acceptance is the reportable part rather than the confinement. In waking life a person held without explanation would demand one. In these reports almost nobody does, because the guilt arrived first and the offence was never required.
Where somebody has real experience of detention, these are not ordinary dreams and belong with the trauma material rather than here.
Where this reads well
Recognising the pattern across arrest, court and prison usually settles the self-suspicion, which is the main harm.
Where it is harder
The shame is durable and gets read as evidence about character.
