Why can I not see the face in a dream photograph?

The image is there, the figure is there, and the face will not resolve. Dreamers describe bringing it closer, which reliably makes it worse, in the same way looking harder at text does.
Two of the hardest things dreams render are combined here: a face, and a face held still for inspection. A photograph demands both at once and cannot supply either.
Where the failure to see the face is the content rather than a frustration, the faceless-person entry is the better page and describes a different and more unsettling experience.

A clean instance of two known limitations colliding, and dreamers confirm the closer-is-worse detail immediately.
Where it is harder
Where the person matters, particularly somebody who has died, the failure is described as painful rather than merely odd.
Worth asking yourself
Did bringing it closer help? Whose face was it meant to be? Did I know who it was anyway?
