Dreaming while you have a fever
Why are fever dreams so strange?
A genuinely different category rather than a variation, and one of the few in this database with a plain physical cause: raised body temperature changes sleep, and it changes what sleep produces.
The reports are unusually consistent and unusually durable. People describe fever dreams from childhood decades later. Scale is the recurring feature, something impossibly large or impossibly small, along with texture, repetition, and a task that cannot be completed and cannot be abandoned.
Emotional content is often thin. Dreamers report these as oppressive rather than frightening, and frequently cannot say what happened in them at all, only what they were like.
There is nothing to interpret. This is what a fever does to dreaming, and the interesting thing about them is that they are so alike across people who have never spoken to each other.
Where this reads well
Recognising them as a category is usually enough. Dreamers are often relieved to hear that the impossible-scale part is typical.
Where it is harder
They are unpleasant while they last, and in children they can be frightening enough to be remembered for life.
