Helplessness

Dreaming about being unable to run

What does it mean to dream your legs will not work?

Among the most reported dream experiences there is, and one of the few with a genuinely physiological explanation rather than a symbolic one.

During REM sleep the body is atonic: motor output is actively suppressed. A dream that involves running is being generated while the sleeping body cannot move, and dreams frequently build a story around that fact. Legs that will not lift, running through water, moving as though the air were solid.

That is not a dismissal of the dream, and it does not mean the content is meaningless. It does mean the sensation has a cause that has nothing to do with what the dreamer was running from.

Where this reads well

The explanation is usually welcome, particularly for people who have found the dream frightening for years.

Where it is harder

Where something is pursuing, this converges with the being-chased material and the fear is considerable.

Worth asking yourself

Could I move anything? What was I trying to reach or escape? Did I wake straight after?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
