Dreaming about guilt with no offence
Why do I feel guilty in a dream without knowing why?
The clearest case in this database of an emotion arriving before its cause.
The dreamer knows they have done something and cannot say what. The not-knowing does not reduce the feeling at all, which is the detail that gives the mechanism away: if the guilt depended on the offence, an absent offence would weaken it.
It does not, because the emotion was generated first and the dream never got round to supplying a reason. Nothing required one.
This same structure produces the arrest with no charge, the trial with no crime and the prison with no sentence. Those records are the same finding wearing different settings, and reading two of them together is more convincing than either alone.
Where this reads well
Dreamers frequently assume the blank means they have repressed something, and are relieved to learn it is the norm rather than a clue.
