Why do apples turn up in dreams more than other fruit?
Apples appear more than any other fruit in reports, and that is almost certainly cultural rather than anything about apples.
They carry more inherited story than any other fruit in the Western world: temptation, poison, knowledge, teachers, Newton. Very few images arrive with that much attached.
The comparison worth making is the chicken. An animal that is everywhere in life and barely dreamt about, against a fruit that is unremarkable in life and over-represented in dreams. In both cases the reports follow exposure to the image rather than to the thing.
That is the continuity account predicting a distribution rather than merely describing one, which is the strongest form it takes in this database.
