Dreaming about a toad
Is a toad different from a frog in a dream?
Distinguished by dreamers who notice, and described as heavier, stiller and more unpleasant.
That tracks the folklore rather than the animals. Toads carry centuries of association with witchcraft, poison and ugliness that frogs largely escape, and the reports follow the story rather than anything about the creature.
It is the same effect the bat-in-the-hair scenario describes: an inherited image doing the work, in a case where almost no dreamer has meaningful first-hand experience to correct it.
Useful as a control. Where two closely related animals produce different dreams and the difference matches the folklore rather than the biology, the folklore is what the dream was built from.

A clean demonstration of inherited content, and testable against how little contact anybody has had with either.
Where it is harder
Dreamers report toads as genuinely repellent, which is a strong reaction to an animal most have never touched.
