Waking up distressed from a dream about splitting up

Why am I upset with my partner over a dream?

Common, and worth its own scenario because of the harm it does.

Dreamers report distress persisting for hours, and occasionally report treating a partner coldly over something that happened entirely inside their own head while that person was asleep beside them.

Emotion in dreams is generated alongside the content rather than caused by it, which is why it survives the content evaporating. The feeling is intact and the reason is gone, so it attaches to whatever is nearest, and what is nearest is usually the person in the dream.

Naming it out loud, lightly, is what dreamers report working. Not confessing it as though something happened, which tends to be received as though something did.

Where this reads well

Dreamers who name it report the morning going differently, and it costs nothing to try.

Where it is harder

Somebody gets treated badly for a dream, which is small and real and entirely avoidable.

Worth asking yourself

How long did the feeling last? Could I still say what happened by lunchtime? Did I take it out on anybody?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
