Dreaming about something multiplying
Why is a lot of something so much worse than one?
Multiplication is the intensifier. One is tolerable, many is not.
The insects entry sets that out in full, and this database finds it everywhere: the rabbits, the weeds, the worms, the maggots. A single one of any of them is reported mildly and a mass of them is not.
What matters is uncontrolled increase rather than number. The beehive and the nest of eggs are both large quantities and both are reported as pleasant, because they are ordered and fixed.
So the aversive thing is growth that nothing constrains, which the counting entry explains: nothing is tracking a total, so there is no limit to what a dream can produce.

Uncontrolled increase is reliably oppressive and dreamers describe it as hard to leave.
