Desire

Dreaming about longing for something you cannot identify

What does it mean to wake up longing for something you cannot name?

A specific and commonly reported state: intense wanting with no object, or an object the dreamer loses on waking and cannot reconstruct.

The likeliest explanation is the ordinary one for dream feeling generally. The emotion is generated and the dream supplies an object for it, and the object is the less durable half. Dreamers frequently retain the wanting for hours after losing every detail of what it was for.

Where it attaches to a place or a time rather than a person, the report belongs with the nostalgia material, which covers the same feeling from a different angle.

Where this reads well

Several dreamers describe these as among the more beautiful experiences dreaming gives them, despite the ache.

Where it is harder

The residue can be unsettling and hard to explain to anybody, which dreamers often find isolating.

Worth asking yourself

Did it attach to anything? Did I lose the object on waking, or was there never one?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
