A real moment that matches a dream you had
Why does real life sometimes match a dream I had?
The experience people find most compelling, and it has a clear explanation that costs nothing to know.
Dreams are recalled vaguely. Waking events are specific. A vague memory matched against a specific event will find correspondences, and the dreams that never match are never counted.
That last part does most of the work. Nobody keeps a tally of the thousands of dreams that failed to come true, so the hit rate looks extraordinary when it is simply unmeasured.
There is a second effect on top of it, and dreamers report it themselves without noticing what it implies: the dream memory becomes more detailed after the matching event, not before. That is the direction memory reconstruction actually runs, and it is the opposite of what a premonition would require.
A journal settles this for anybody who wants to test it, which is the honest recommendation. Write them down beforehand and see.
Where this reads well
Testable, cheaply, by anybody. That is unusual in this subject and it is worth taking up.
Where it is harder
The explanation is unwelcome to people for whom the experience meant something, and it is offered as the evidence rather than as a verdict on what they felt.
Worth asking yourself
Had I written the dream down before it happened? How specific was what I recalled? How many dreams have not matched anything?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
