Dreaming about somewhere familiar that you do not recognise
What does it mean to dream about a place you know but do not recognise?
A distinctive and disorienting variant: the dreamer knows they are somewhere familiar, and it does not look like itself at all.
This is the clearest available demonstration that dreams identify things by knowledge rather than by appearance. The certainty is supplied directly and does not depend on what is being seen, which is why it survives the building looking completely wrong.
The same mechanism produces composite people, animals that are not quite animals, and houses with rooms that cannot exist. Once recognised in one place it becomes visible everywhere in a journal.
Where this reads well
Recognising the mechanism converts these from unsettling to interesting, and it is one of the more satisfying things to learn about your own dreams.
Where it is harder
Where the place is a childhood home, the wrongness can carry real sadness and belongs with the nostalgia material.
