Dreaming about losing a child

What does it mean to dream you lost your child?

Near-universal among parents and one of the most frightening dreams people report. It is not a warning, not a premonition, and not a sign of bad parenting. It is the most predictable possible output of a mind that spends its waking hours tracking a small person.

The setting is usually crowded or transitional: shops, stations, beaches, car parks. Places where it could actually happen.

Where this reads well

Finding them is reported with enormous relief and, unusually, dreamers often remember the relief more clearly than the fear.

Where it is harder

Where the dream loops, or the child cannot be found, it is worth reading alongside the general anxiety-dream material rather than as being about the child.

Worth asking yourself

Where were we? Is it somewhere I actually worry about?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
