Boss

Dreaming about an old boss

Why do I dream about a manager I have not seen in years?

Reported constantly and asked about rarely, which is a shame, because it is one of the more informative patterns in the database.

The manager is frequently from a job the dreamer left a decade or more ago, and often one they had no strong feelings about. Dreamers find the specificity strange: not the worst boss they ever had, just an old one.

Old workplaces recur in dreams far out of proportion to how much anybody thinks about them, and the same is true of schools. What the dream appears to reach for is a setting where being assessed was routine, and it reaches for whichever one it has to hand rather than the one that would make narrative sense.

It is not unfinished business with that person. Dreamers who go looking for some residue there generally do not find one.

Where this reads well

These are usually low-distress and occasionally warm, which makes them easier to log honestly than the current-boss reports.

Where it is harder

The only real cost is the puzzlement, and the answer is that the choice of person carries less than it appears to.

Worth asking yourself

Which job was it? How did I actually feel about them at the time? What was the setting?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
