Why can I not read a book in my dream?
The characteristic report, and it is one of the few dream phenomena with a solid explanation behind it: text in dreams is genuinely unstable.
The words move, change on a second look, or are in a script that is nearly familiar. Dreamers describe reading a line, looking away, and finding something different on return.
Dreams generate detail on demand and do not keep what they generated. Text is the hardest possible case, because every letter has to be reproduced identically for it to survive a second glance, and none of it is.
This is why reading is the most dependable reality check there is, and the trying-to-read scenario under glasses describes the same thing from the other direction.
Where this reads well
The single most useful thing in this record. Look at text, look away, look back: if it has changed, you are dreaming.
Where it is harder
Where something important must be read the frustration is considerable, and dreamers almost never succeed.
Worth asking yourself
Did the words change? What was I trying to read? Did I try more than once?
