What does it mean to dream an animal speaks to you?

Dreamers describe an animal speaking and describe finding it entirely unremarkable at the time. The strangeness arrives on waking, sometimes hours later.
Set that against the fact that a wrong staircase or a mismatched shadow frequently does produce an objection inside the dream. A talking animal is a far larger impossibility and passes without comment.
So what triggers the sense that something is wrong is not the size of the impossibility. It appears to be whether the dream is asked to keep two things consistent with each other. A shadow must agree with a light source; a talking dog need agree with nothing.
