Dreaming about writing in an unfamiliar script
What does it mean to dream about text in a language you cannot read?
The written counterpart, and it fails in the opposite direction, which is informative.
Speech in an unknown language arrives fully understood. Text in an unknown script arrives fully unreadable. Dreamers describe characters that are almost familiar, that shift, or that resolve into something else on a second look.
The difference is that understanding is a feeling and can be handed over whole, while text is an object that has to be drawn and redrawn. One is cheap for a dream to produce and the other is the most expensive thing it attempts.
That makes unfamiliar script an unusually strong reality check. If you are looking at writing that will not settle, you are asleep.
Where this reads well
A dependable lucidity cue, and the contrast with the spoken version makes the mechanism obvious.
Where it is harder
The sense of a message withheld is durable, and dreamers assume the failure was theirs.
Worth asking yourself
Did the characters change? Did I feel I should be able to read it? Did I try twice?
