Fire in Islamic dream interpretation

Fire is read by what it does. Controlled and useful is one reading; consuming and spreading is another entirely.

What this page is

What follows describes readings recorded in this tradition, with the tradition's own qualifications attached. It is not a claim that a dream about any of these things means anything, and it is not religious guidance.

A contained fire that gives light or cooks is associated with benefit and with guidance. Fire that spreads, burns a house or consumes crops is associated with conflict, loss and punishment, and the manuals treat the two as separate images rather than as degrees of one.

Smoke without flame has its own entry in most compilations, generally unfavourable, and is read as trouble that obscures rather than trouble that destroys.

The tradition's interest in the verb applies here as everywhere: being burned, lighting a fire, carrying fire and putting one out are four readings, not one.

What is actually recorded about dreaming of fire

Fire is the most double-edged element in dream reports: destruction and purification, anger and warmth. What decides the reading is whether you are near it or in it, and whether you lit it.
