The manuals associate falling with a descent in status, fortune or standing, and scale it: falling from a great height is read more severely than a stumble, and landing unhurt reverses much of the reading.
Falling into water is treated separately again, and is generally read more favourably than falling onto ground, on the tradition's consistent principle that clear water is a benign element.
The tradition offers nothing on the hypnic jerk, which is the ordinary physiological cause of a great many falling dreams and is covered in the sleep-science section.
