The Whisperer

Hearing your name called as you fall asleep

Why do you hear someone call your name when falling asleep?

A single clear utterance of the sleeper's own name, at the edge of sleep, with no source. It is one of the most commonly reported experiences in this whole archive and one of the least frightening.

The auditory equivalent of hypnagogic imagery is well documented: sounds generated at sleep onset, often speech, often a name. The specificity is what makes it startling: not a noise, but your name, clearly.

It does not repeat. That single non-repetition is the most consistent detail across accounts, and it is what usually convinces the sleeper it was not a real voice.

What the reports agree on

Very well documented, benign, and extremely common. Most people who report it are relieved to learn how ordinary it is.

Where they differ, and what to be careful of

Reports of a familiar voice can be distressing, particularly if the person has died. The voice is generated; it carries no message.

Worth recording if this was yours

Was it once only? Did I recognise the voice?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
