The Old Hag

A figure that moves closer

What do people report when the figure approaches?

The minority variant, and the one that most distresses people. Most reports across the archive describe a figure that stays where it is; a smaller number describe approach.

What almost never appears in the accounts is arrival. Reports overwhelmingly end before contact: the episode breaks, the sleeper wakes, or the figure is simply gone. Whether that reflects the experience or reflects what people remember of it is not something this archive can settle.

Accounts of approach also cluster with the longer episodes, which is consistent with approach being a feature of duration rather than of intent.

What the reports agree on

Contact is very rarely reported. The approach almost always ends before it resolves.

Where they differ, and what to be careful of

This is the version most likely to cause lasting fear of sleep. If it recurs, the sleep-paralysis pages and the rescripting programme will do more for you than reading this archive will.

Worth recording if this was yours

How long did it last? Did it reach me? What ended the episode?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
