The weight and the doorway

sleep paralysis

I woke at about four and could not move anything except my eyes. There was pressure across my chest like someone kneeling on it, and a shape in the doorway that I could not turn into a coat or a lamp however hard I tried. Forty seconds, maybe. I have had this since I was nineteen and it still frightens me every time.

The pressure on the chest is the part nobody warns you about. Mine is always exactly the same and I have stopped expecting it to be different.

  • SamSleep-science information

The breathing muscles stay paralysed along with everything else during REM, so the chest feeling has a fairly boring cause even though it does not feel boring at the time. The NHS page on sleep paralysis is the plainest write-up I have found.

Thank you. Knowing the mechanism does not stop it happening, but it does stop the hour afterwards.
